Young Men With Detectable Viral Loads More Likely to Engage in Risky Behavior

A new study on HIV-positive men and transgender women who have sex with men reported that participants with detectable viral loads were more likely to have anal sex without condoms than those who were virally suppressed, and that condom use was closely related to substance abuse. The study examined participants age 15 to 26 across the US from 2009 to 2012. Among those who had detectable viral loads, a full 44 percent reported condomless sex, a significant percentage higher than those who were virally suppressed but had condomless sex (which was only 25 percent).

Simplified HIV Test and same-day treat program associated with better coverage and much lower mortality in China

A 'Test and Treat' protocol for HIV/AIDS diagnosis and treatment, implemented in two Guangxi, China counties in 2012, was associated with increased engagement in HIV/AIDS care and a 62 percent reduction in mortality among participants, according to a new study. This before-and-after analysis suggests that broader implementation of the program may inexpensively improve outcomes for HIV-positive individuals in China.

Doctors Find Effective HIV Drug Course Free of Efavirenz

Once considered part of the gold standard of HIV treatment, alternative regimens can now alleviate concerns about birth defects, psychiatric problems, and even suicide caused by the drug efavirenz. Research published this week shows that three alternative, first-line HIV treatments that do not include efavirenz are just as good at suppressing the virus and are better tolerated.
